“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed”
-Mahatma Gandhi
Knight’s, Pardoner’s, Miller’s and Wife of Bath’s were the tales presented in our class, authored by the father of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer. All of these tales have beautiful story and lessons to learn with. Most of these tales are story of love but among others, the most I want is Pardoner’s tale because it has beautiful story and have so much moral lessons that we can get from it.
The Pardoner’s tale is a story of three friends who went in a forest to give justice to the death of their friend, but they found their own death, instead. Perhaps, the first thing that enters in your mind is that they were also killed by the same person who did, but you’re wrong. What really happen to them? This is the real story.
Summary (Based on my own understanding)
Three friends drunk with wine went to the forest to find Death, a thief who killed their friend. While they were walking, they met an old woman and they asked her if she saw Death. She replied that the last time she saw death was under the tree. So they search for that tree but they did not find Death there, instead, they found treasure so they divided it equally among themselves. Then, they asked the youngest among them to buy food for them to eat, but he planned to put poison in the food to kill his two friends to get all the treasure. Unknowingly, his two friends plan to kill him, so when she came back he was stabbed to death by the two. Then his two friends ate the food with poison and were also killed. That’s what I mean that they found their own death in the forest.
The lesson I learned from this tale is that too much greedy is a sin which can cause our death, like what happen to the friends in the story. This also shows that money is the root of all evil in this world. Therefore, let us be contented on what God has given to us, let us count are blessings and be thankful to Him.
